Andy Paoli

Andy Paoli. A blues és a Rock ’n Roll érdekes műfajok. Nehezek. Hamarosan kiderül, mire is gondoltam igazából!

Szia Udy! Először gratulálnék a weblapotokhoz. Néhány évvel később szerettem bele a blues zenébe.

A nagyokat utánozni, utánunk menni.

Ahogy emlékszem 15 évesen teljesen megőrültem a zenéjéért. A legnagyobb gitárosnak tartom!

A blues-tól a country-ig mindenhol használom. Akkor jöjjenek a gitárok! GHS Boomers.010 on electric, Martin Phosphor Bronze.011 on acoustic.

Zenekarok.

A ’30-as években, R. Johnson személyesíti meg a bluest. Jöttek a ’40-es évek, ahogy terjed a városokba, itt Muddy Waters-t említeném. Aztán megszületett a rock ’n roll. ’50-es évek, Elvis Presley. A brit és amerikai színek, hozzák elénk a Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, és Hendrix világát. ’70-es évek, Led Zeppelin. Végül a digitális zenék megjelenése, térhódítása következik, a ’80-as évektől, napjainkig. Minden korszakot a meghatározó alakjain keresztül mutatunk be, amihez videókat, képeket is felhasználunk a színpadon. Talán Magyarországra is, miért ne?

Andy, beszélnél róla, hogy hogyan közelíted meg a blues-on kívüli műfajokat!

Bár a blues-on és a rock ’n roll-on nőttem fel, sok egyéb műfaj is hasonló szinten foglalkoztat. Említhetem a jazz-t, a pop-ot, a funky-t, vagy akár a hard rock-ot. Londonban főleg pop zenét játszom. Szeretek belépni más műfajok világába is.

Beszélnél pár szóban a terveidről?

Nagyobb figyelmet, energiát szeretnék fordítania saját zenéimre, amit a saját zenekarommal tervezek. Tehát bejöhet a zeneszerzés is a képbe. Mindhalálig rock ’n roll!

Andy, nagyon köszönöm a lehetőséget, és a Gitarvilag.hu látogatói nevében is sok sikert a továbbiakban!

Köszönöm, sziasztok.

In english

Andi Paoli. The blues and the Rock ’n Roll very complicated genres. Hard things. These genres are played by many guitarists, but some of them can play them very well. Andy is one of them who is very good at playing blues and the Rock ’n Roll and understand these genres perfectly. Andy, congratulate on your play, and thank you very much that you gave us this interwiev. First, please, say something about yourself!

Hi Udy! First, congrats for your website. I’m glad and honoured to contribute to it. I’m Italian and I’ve been playing guitar for more than 25 years. I began at the age of 8 and started performing in front of an audience very soon in a rock band covering Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and other rock stuff. After a few years my love for Blues started and I studied for hours every day through the blues masters, such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King and Freddie King. I fell in love with Jimi Hendrix, his style, his amazing sound and I understood that Fender Strat and Marshall amp were the best matching ever. And immediately, as a direct consequence, Stevie Ray Vaughan who represents one of the most evident influence in my personal style. I played all along Italy with a rock-blues band called Blues Machine and after that I founded my own band, a power trio, covering Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck tunes, performing in Italy, France, UK and Hungary (yes, I played in Budapest some years ago and I recorded there for a local singer). At the same time I worked a lot as a freelancer touring from the south to the north of Italy. Teaching has always been in my blood and one important aspect in my life: about ten years ago I founded my own guitar school in Livorno (Tuscany – Italy) called Andy’s Lab with lots of students. With Alessio Franchini, a fellow musician, I developed a sort of musical, called The Blues Evolution, performing in many important theatres in Italy. Now, I’ve been in London for one year playing different styles, from pop to rock in many venues, I’m running a tutorial website (www.andyslab.com) and often I go to Italy to take care of my school and my italian students.

Your play is very interesting. At the same time this is fluent but determined. Why I like listening your music, that it is not assertive! How did you find your style what your own?

I think finding your sound is the most important thing you can do as a guitarist. Everyone has his own personality and a good guitarist should collect his experiences made during the years in a personal and unique style. People who hear your playing from the distance must say: „It’s him!”. Even though in a first stage, when you’re exploring the instrument, it’s natural to try to emulate big guitarists, there is a second stage where you have to build up your sound, as a result of the influences and background you had collected during the first stage. That’s what I’ve done but I think it should happen quite naturally, it concerns your musical maturity. Although you’re good to emulate a guitarist, you’ll always be the bad copy of him!

What do you thing, this is possible playing blues without feeling?

Blues is a special and powerful mean of expression, it was born in a particular social condition among people who needed it just to feel themselves human and alive. Without feeling blues would have never existed. Think about the blues masters: John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King, etc.. can you imagine their music without feeling? The way you touch your instrument is passion, there is your story inside a bending and vibrato that comes directly from your heart. Actually, music in general needs feeling and passion to rich people’s souls.

Andy, I feel, blues of Steve Ray Vaughan is very near to you. When did you turn to SRV?

Yes, Stevie Ray Vaughan has been very important in my musical background. I remember when I was 15 or something I was completely crazy for him: as a blues and rock lover, I was stunned by his complex sound, clean, drive and extremely powerful at the same time. And I was captured by his incredible dynamics. I think he was one of the last important guitarists. I had been studying and imitating him so much that, when I played on my own or with a band, I could play just his licks!! It happend for few years then I moved forward, and now Stevie Ray is one of the biggest influences but not the only one. One of the best guitarists ever.

As I see, you have a great collection of instruments. What was the main aspect that you chose your riggs?

First I’d like to say that my favourite guitar is the Fender Stratocaster, ever! I can play everything with that guitar, from blues to rock and roll, from country to pop.. it’s incredible how everything is properly placed. I prefer the rosewood fretboard, even though maple neck has a very particular sound and sometimes it’s a better choice! In general when I try a guitar the main aspect is the neck: I need to feel  absolutely comfortable with it. Guitars: Fender Stratocaster Sunburst Plus Deluxe (neck pu KidMan, middle and bridge pu Fender Noiseless), Fender American Standard shoreline gold (bridge pu Seymour Duncan Little JB), Fender D’Aquisto, Ibanez Tallman, Yamaha acoustic guitars, Amps: Marshall 1959SPL 100W Head + 4x12 green back Marshall cabinet, Vox AC30, FX: Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, Proco Rat Distortion, Big Muff Distortion, Vox Wah, TC Electronic Chorus-Doubler, Reverb-Delay Roland DEP-5 rack unit, POD 2.0 (just for practicing, somethimes used for recording video tutorials), Boss tuner String: GHS Boomers .010 on electric, Martin Phosphor Bronze .011 on acoustic Picks: Fender Heavy.

What do we need to know about The Blues Evolution?

The Blues Evolution is an interesting project I made up a few years ago with a friend of mine and good musician Alessio Franchini. It’s a multimedia show (music and video) that wants to reconstruct the history of modern music. A journey that starts from Mississippi, (the land where the first bluesmen signed the pact with the Devil) and goes on spreading the blues around the world, through all the changes and evolutions: the consecration of early 30's (R. Johnson), the spread in the cities of the 40s (Muddy Waters) and the birth of rock'n'roll in the 50s (Elvis Presley), the British and U.S. scene of the 60s (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Hendrix ) and 70s (Led Zeppelin). Finally the rise of digital music that alternates with revival from the 80s until today. Everything through a range of meaningful songs played live (from a base band to which many guests are added during the show) and through projection of videos and the images that characterize the major historical moments of several decades. Until now we’ve played the show just in Italy but I’d like to bring it abroad... perhaps in Hungary, why not?

Andy, blues and Rock ’n Roll exclusively, or you jaunt to other genres?

Although blues and rock’n’roll are my first choice (I grew up with them), I’m into many genres of music.. jazz, pop, funky, hard rock. In London I’m playing pop music mainly. I enjoy playing different styles, you can learn so many things and it’s a good way to become personal! I love Jeff Beck for that, he’s incredible: he can play everything with his unique sound.

Could you say about your plans? What is the goal, that you would like to come up with?

I’ve been playing guitar for years with bands and artists… too many years! I’d like to make my own band, a three or four piece, to play and develop my own songs, as I did in the past. I feel it’s time to spend and invest my energy in my music and.. keep rockin’!

Andy thank you very much for your help, in the name of visitors of Gitarvilag.hu. Good luck, in what follows!

Thank you very much!
